Introduction To Internet Marketing

Almost everyone wants to make money online--including the people telling you how to do it. The strange thing is that most of these "make money online" sites and articles assume that you already know all about it. There isn't much out there for beginners.

Here is a short introduction to some of the most popular Internet programs for generating income online. If you find any terms you don't understand, please read Glossary of Terms for Internet Marketers.

AFFILIATE PROGRAM (Referral Program, Associate Program)

Many companies that sell products and services online will pay for referrals. Affiliate programs have been around for a long time and are still one of the most popular ways to make money online. You'll have thousands to choose from, free to sign up, easy to set up, and little or no maintenance afterward. Pick the products you'd like to sell, put a special link or banner ad on your website, and get paid when your visitors click through and buy from your page. These programs come in many shapes and sizes. Please read Introduction To Affiliate Programs for detailed information.

GPT (Get Paid To)

This term covers the online moneymaking programs that don't require a website. Examples are: Get Paid To Surf (autosurf), Get Paid To Search, Get Paid To Read (email), and Get Paid To Promote (products/websites). Most of these programs go by their initials--PTR (pay to read), PTP (pay to promote), etc. Get Paid To Take Surveys is another very popular way to make money online. These programs offer very low payouts, but they're usually free to join. Some of them come with extra benefits, like advertising credits, contests, games, and prizes.

HYIP (High Yield Investment Program)

These are high yield, but also high risk. They're usually free to join, but you must buy in if you want to make money. The idea is to let the people who run the program invest your money in volatile stocks or currencies. Most of them pay daily into your account, but they discourage you from withdrawing your money by charging fees or penalties.

MLM (Multi Level Marketing)

MLM programs work very much the same online as off. These are hands-on programs where you will be very much involved in learning about a product line, communicating with customers, and developing a sales force (downline). Many MLM's will give you a web page, so a site of your own isn't always necessary.

PPC (Pay Per Click)

You need a website to make money with a PPC program. This is a form of advertising that pays you when someone clicks through to the advertiser's site from one of your ads--even if they don't buy anything. Google Adsense is a PPC program. From a marketing standpoint, PPC programs are very similar to affiliate programs. Once you get them set up, you can forget about them. You have no money or time invested, so you're free to concentrate your efforts and resources in other areas, and they usually pay, automatically, when you reach a preset dollar value of clicks.

Whatever program you join, be sure you understand exactly what you're getting in to before investing any time or money. If the program has a message board, visit and read before getting involved. Almost all of these programs have a nasty habbit of glorifying the opportunity and glossing over the fees, risks, and requirements.
