Rejections

by Susan Molthop

Revised August 3, 2007

I've had my share of rejections--both form letters and nice, encouraging notes. One time, I even had a "request for guidelines" rejected. On another occasion, I researched an opportunity, sent in EXACTLY what they asked for, and received a form response telling me to research the opportunity and send what they asked for. Huh? In both of these examples, it was obvious that nobody read even the first sentence of my submission.

Here are some samples of rejections sent in by YOU:

"This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force."
Dorothy Parker 1893-1967

When I had about 6 novels accepted I sent out some poems to one of our leading arts magazines. My rejection was attached to my list of publications. It said simply: 'Gawd, and you want XYZ magazine too!'

Don't give up. Even Stephen King had to pay his dues. Here's a short Stephen King Biography , by Barry Veinotte. (Read what happened to Carrie.)
